August (and oh man!)

Good morning 3am :) ... well, 2:46 am

needs more contrast....bike is too light ...but I need to keep on going, I need to be able to print these tomorrow and I am already taking out 6 hours for travel, and 2 hours for frames... and meet with my professor so he can critique my work and tell me that I stink as an artist and shouldn't actually be doing my final show for school, but be going back to school (no, he won't say it- at least not like that, but I feel like he should) I need to see if I can re-scedual or else I will not have enough time to print. Dang, unless I take a later bus after 4... (I am still a "student" so I can use the campus print lab, which is actually really good- and really cheap- however they close at 5...I won't have enough time. I'll have to go back on Thursday/ Friday to print (then on Saturday to paint those frames) the print lab is closed on Saturday... I can wait till Monday (that gives me a total of 7 days... 7 days... really! What am I doing? I can't do this....

I need to go to bed, no one thinks right at 3 in the morning and the choices I am making right now are just dumb.

g-night

July

this one is my very least favorite... am I really getting worse?

re-do #2

you need to love your artist friends...

A true friend will tell you what you need to hear- not what you want to hear. Thanks Mia

I have more to go over these than I thought- but I can do it. The goal is to have all the digital work done this Wednesday. Then I will print them off and actually watercolor- because as much as I was hoping, I have lost life by not working in my favorite medium. I am for sure going over the skin. It is my favorite part and it does show. All I want to do is watercolor, and it shows.

They are not bad, we just know they can be better :)

Have a happy day.

(I am taking a break, see you all in a few!)

June

I really played with the watercolor effects in this one (also note that I will not use a filter if I can help it- and so far I haven't)

May

well, I have been doing pretty good today...we will see how good I actually did in a few days, right ;)

January

March

I am still liking February the most....hopefully they will continue to get better :(
If I get them all done this weekend it will give me time to sleep on them so I can fix the issues in them (I can't see right now, but will later on) before I print.

February

these were the colors in my room when I was making this...I wonder if winter weather will ever go away?

Enjoy

April

Do you ever get to the point that you are making work- but you are not really sure if it is good or not? I have that feeling right now. I made April digital, but I don't know if it is very good.
1) Because in the back of my mind I am like, "watercolor, I wish I had time to watercolor.."
2) Because I am always uncertain with digital...still because it will never print as good as it looks on screen...ever...EVER
3) If you have done your math I have about 1 day to complete a painting. Digital this can be done however.

I like to convince myself that all great work is done when the artist is teetering on their deadline... It certainly kicks in the fight-or-flight :)

done with the ink...finally...2 weeks to go!

Well, they are far from perfect but they are done...a week late, which means I have just 2 weeks! Mercy where does the time go?!

I did learn something on my last inking that would have sped up the process. I usually have a problem with my ink clumping-up (I believe this was by the heat- I use an acrylic base ink which is waterproof and dries quicker than india ink) so I decided to put the ink bottle in ice water (while working on June which made the ink glide and I was able to finish it in no time. A little stressful looking back at how much time I could have saved.

Oh well, I know better next time.

I am a little bummed I can't do these in watercolor, but I just don't have the time! So we will see how well we can do digitally, shall we :)

I am still here!

I know it has been forever since I have blogged, but I am still here! My BFA show has taken a few twists and turns since I last posted.

For one, I completely changed my medium. Why? Well because a few very honest friends/illustrators were good enough to tell me that my sketches on this blog were better than what I was producing. (laugh...) so I started over. And I am grateful to them even though I was set back a ton.

Another reason for the infrequent postings is that I really, really, really feel like I have forgotten to draw so I have sketched and inked over many times. Very frustrating... however I still should have posted that.

As well, life did happen. I had a "real" job... trying to find another "real" job (because the other real one was a temp)...and a movie I was/am a designer for...and illustration jobs... I had long commutes.... had to move....and graduated this Friday......BUT

I am discouraged that I haven't been posting more or showing you what I have been producing. This blog was supposed to be about a journey- but it sorta fell between expectations and life. Hopefully a lesson learned.

Anyway, here are some color comps. The show as you remember is called A Day in a Year. Basically we are following a single of a young lady (*no longer me, just a girl) day in a year. So while producing these color comps not only did I have to think about the time of day she was in but as well what kind of lighting we would see at that time of year.

*the reason for that is people couldn't tell it was a mini-me so I gave her more interesting curly hair.

Here are all but June and August, I just can't seem to figure our the drawings yet. But all but those are inked except for a few details.

So bad, but good news (sort-a...)

I am changing the media of my work (which means I need to start over)

News to come soon on the details.

77 days, 11 weekends...GO!

I am sharing my BFA show with my dear friend Maria Mercer Adams who I love and adore. I was just reading her blog when I realized that I have 77 more days till my show. That is 11 more weekends. That is ten fingers and one toe! That is less than one painting a week!!

I was shaken to my core when I realized I was doing nothing. I was on Mia's blog on one tab (instead of actually talking to my friend, I was stalking her) on another tab I was on Facebook stalking other friends and "friends..."

The point was I was living through other people when I should have been living my own life that had things that needed to get done in. On Friday I meet with my BFA advisor. I cannot show him as little as I have now. I pray that I don't need a bigger kick than this.

Stalking has it time and place, but not now. But if you must do some friendly stalking-stalk Jed. You will be glad you did :)

Off to the studio!

color comps for "the other paintings"...

Here are the colors. I am still not there in color. I am really good at line, getting there with value, but once I meet color it just seems to get all lost! Oh well...the more I practice the better I will become. As always have a happy one.
That is a little better...

Rough Layout...

Here is an example of how I planing on displaying my BFA show. There are four insets in the gallery (that I am praying to get) if I do not I will need a plan b...or c.... but let us pretend that I do have plan a. The pictures will be in simple wooden frames that I will paint white and stress (maybe) or they will just remain a simple pine color. The clouds/flowers/leaves will be made of fabric and possibly paper. Right now I imagine the clouds being like big pillows. The snowflakes are going to be handmade doilies that I was given when I went to GA this November, and the rain drops will be hand-strung crystal beads. There will be words under the frame.

character design...

I had some waiting time today before church so I quickly painted this up in Photoshop. This is what I am thinking the main girl in the "A Day In A Year" series would look like. FYI, I am basing her off of me, all the way to her hair cut, down to how she holds herself, to where she places her cardigan on her messenger bag. Why? Because it is fun! As you can see not exact (I am not making a self portrait) just the essence/ character of me. It is my show after all. Have a happy day.

the other paintings in the show...

Some extra pieces (pretty much to 1, build a better portfolio, and 2, to take up space ;)
I love the 3rd and 4th one down the most.

If it all looks good, this is what I want to do for my BFA show. It is called "A Day In A Year" and it will be with my paper dolls with a model made of fabric, wood, (pretty much whatever works, and then have it photographed.)
I have been studying Red Nose Studio's a lot, to get the basic idea of how to make this. (Mine will not be made of clay, but be paper dolls with fabric clothing)
